The South African State Theatre, as part of its Incubator Programme, presents “Amend” from 9 to 12 of November 2016.

It is a play of young artists challenging issues of homosexuality in the modern South Africa, directed and written by the young, up-coming Sibusiso Khwinana – an award-winner for best director for his play “Tit for tat” at the Hello Festival brought by TUT (2014).

Amend is set in the new democratic South Africa, focusing on the issue of homosexuality. It follows the story of a lesbian girl, Simphiwe, who is raped by her male friend, who is convinced they are in love. Simphiwe finds a way to bring the perpetrator to justice. The play explores the taboo debate on the issue of homosexuality. In the end it celebrates how individuals’ sentiments can differ without trespassing others’ freedom of expression.

Khwinana, in a short period of time, has managed to stage his original plays, including Tit for tat, Amend and The essence of Coit. In December 2015 he received two awards for best script and best production at the SAST Mzansi Fela Festival CADO programme with ‘Amend’. He has worked with directors like Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, Tshepo Samuel Ratona, Ayanda Sithebe, and Bongani Masango. This is a man to look out for.

This production is achieved through the SAST Incubator programme, designed in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture to accelerate the successful development of entrepreneurial artists through business and technical support and service. This programme’s main goal is to produce successful artists that will leave the programme financially viable and freestanding. Amend is proudly supported by the LGBTI community!

Amend will be staged at SAST’s 100 seating Momentum Theatre. A preview will be available on 9 November, while opening is on Thursday 10, running until 12 November. The play has a 16-year-old age restriction.

A young lesbian lady will be “correctively” raped, and she will fight back. This is booming talent. Education in entertainment. Real activism! Don’t miss out. Tickets can be obtained at Computicket at R80 per person. Amend is proudly supported by the LGBTI community.
