IMEXSA - Independent Music Exporters South AfricaThe Independent Music Exporters South Africa (IMEXSA) is NOW accepting submissions for participation at SXSW, Primavera and Canada Music Week.

Export-ready enterprises are encouraged to apply and stand a chance of being part of the selected delegates to attend these international exhibitions. Companies from outside Gauteng are especially encouraged to apply.

IMEXSA’s focus is to develop and increase the number of music exporters in South Africa by identifying trade opportunities and assisting companies to take advantage of those opportunities. Supported by GDDA and Funded by the Department of Trade and Industry, IMEXSA has been operating over the past 8 years. During this time, they have participated in and presented South African Unsigned and Independent Music Professionals at Popkomm-Germany, Womex – UK, Primavera Pro – Spain, Canada Music Week in Toronto, MIDEM in France, CMJ in New York and South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin – Texas.

South by Southwest (abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By) is an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with SXSW Interactive lasting for five days, music for seven days and film running concurrently for nine days. Comedy and gaming components to the festival are particularly fast-growing.

Primavera Sound is a music festival that takes place between the end of May and beginning of June in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The first edition took place in 2001 with about 8000 people in attendance. The event continued to grow every year and by 2015 the attendance was reported to be about 190,000. This year’s event took place from 30 May to 3 June.

Canadian Music Week began in 1981 and has grown to become one of Canada’s largest and most influential media and music conferences. It draws top industry professionals to participate in a four-day program of activities. Designed to stimulate the exchange of market intelligence, increase dialogue and provide networking opportunities, Canadian Music Week continues to present the ideal platform for more than 3,000 national and international delegates. It’s Canada’s Largest & Longest Running New Music Festival and Conference. The 37th instalment takes place from 6 to 12 of May 2019, bringing conferences, awards, film, technology and music together under one roof.

Applications for SXSW are closing on 15 July 2018. For Canada Music Week they close on 31 July 2018 and for Primavera they close on 31 October 2018. Full details on what documents are required and where to submit them are all on the website. Applications can also be couriered to IMEXSA offices in Midrand. For music samples, applicants should include online links to their artist’s music. A valid tax clearance certificate is needed as part of the application package. It’s also the responsibility of each applicant to always have a valid tax clearance if requested. The application process could take up to six months and hence all applicants are advised to immediately apply for a new certificate if theirs expires. IMEXSA can at any stage of the application process request an applicant to resubmit a tax clearance if theirs has expired. Failure to submit an updated one could result in the application being declined. Successful applicants will be required to pay a commitment fee of about R2000. They will also need to pay for their VISA applications and Insurance. Only flights, accommodation, exhibition costs and conference registrations will be paid for the successful applicants.
