Jongosi, the Hilton Arts Festival’s Youth Programme has two exciting developments this year.
The aim of Jongosi is embodied in the very name. The late, great Johnny Clegg invented the word “Jongosi” from the Afrikaans “jong os” signifying everything that is young, powerful and strong. He granted permission for the Hilton Arts Festival to name the youth programme Jongosi to be sure that it remained true to these core values.
Thanks to the generosity of two sponsors, the 2019 programme is stronger and more powerful than ever. First National Bank and DWR Distribution (stage and event lighting equipment from the world’s top manufacturers) have dug deep into their pockets to make sure that learners from schools in socio-economically depressed areas can attend Jongosi. The selected schools are Umthoqotho School and Thembelihle Primary School. Learners will attend a day of theatre, music, comedy, art, workshops and talks in a vibrant atmosphere. International research has proved, beyond any doubt, that exposure to and education in the arts results in more balanced, happier, strategic thinking citizens. The Hilton Arts Festival wishes to thank FNB and DWR for their generosity.
FNB has also made another wonderfully exciting opportunity available to the Jongosi programme. Under the supervision of iainEWOKrobinson, well known professional painter and aerosol artwork specialist, learners will be given a chance to try their hands at graffiti. Armed with cans of aerosol paint, they will graffiti a large wall at Hilton College. Participants must be prepared to be imaginative, creative, climb scaffolding and get their hands dirty! The workshop promises to provide a unique addition to the creative arsenal of any young, aspiring artist. At the end of the day, iainEWOKrobinson will add the finishing touches to this graffiti wall creating a unified piece of art with a strong message. FNB is to be congratulated on making this interactive, educational and fun project possible.
