Leading Bollywood superstar, Ashley Lobo, is in South Africa as both choreographer and director of A Passage To Bollywood now at the Joburg Theatre.
Ashley Lobo is an Indian-Australian choreographer who trained in Australia at the Bodenweiser Dance Centre (under the late Margaret Chapple) and at the much-reputed Sydney Dance Company. He moved back to India in 1998 and has been working passionately since to spread the awareness of international dance in India. He was recently felicitated for his immense contribution in the field of arts by the city of Mumbai at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2016.
Ashley was one of the three judges for the Indian reality dance talent show India’s Dancing Superstar on Star Plus. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Danceworx Performing Arts Academy.
Ashley is excited about being in South Africa with the internationally acclaimed and celebrated Indian drama; A Passage To Bollywood, which runs at Joburg Theatre until July 9 2017.
Ashley Lobo’s involvement in theatre and dance goes back over 30 years with stage and film and was the inevitable result of being brought up in a very artistic environment.
Ashley is one of India’s top Bollywood choreographers having choreographed over 25 hit films with actors like Sharukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan to name a few.
Ashley is the artistic director of The Danceworx Academy & Navdhara India Dance Theatre, two of India’s top dance institutions, whose productions of Amaara – A Journey of Love and A Passage to Bollywood successfully toured the US, China, and Israel receiving standing ovations all around.
Ashley has developed the Prana Paint™ technique – a unique sensitizing approach that explores movement through connectivity, yoga, breath, and touch. He has been invited to teach this unique technique at educational institutions like the Joffrey Ballet and contemporary dance companies like the Inbal Dance Theatre Company. His Prana Paint™ technique attracts numerous international dance students to come and explore their artistry at his studio in Mumbai, India. This unique approach has put Ashley on the International radar and has led to him being invited as a guest choreographer to create a full-length International contemporary dance production by The Ballet Chemnitz in Germany. This production will premiere in Chemnitz, Germany, in November 2017.
Ashley has choreographed extensively for stage and cinema with over 25 feature films and as many stage productions. Both in film and theatre, he is known for producing work with a uniquely strong sense of connection, which he has developed through his PranaPaint™ technique.
A Passage To Bollywood runs on The Mandela stage, Joburg Theatre, from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8pm, and 3pm on Sundays, up until July 9 2017. Tickets are from R160 to R350.
