If you’ve been looking for an ideal family outing that is easy on the wallet – especially at this time of year – look no further! Iziko Museums of South Africa is inviting you to step indoors and #BeatTheHeat – discover, encounter, explore … art, nature, people and more!

Explorers of all ages are invited to see and experience the wonders of South Africa and Africa’s natural history at the Iziko South African Museum – be amazed by rock art which dates back millions of years, and discover how Africa’s ancient civilisations were able to survive. Go on a prehistoric journey with our African dinosaurs and meet the gigantic great-great-grandfather of all ‘crocs’ – the Sarcosuchus! You can also take a walk on the wild side with the Nature’s Best Photography Africa 2018 exhibition, where the best international wildlife photographers are showcasing their most exquisite images of the African continent.

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome is offering visitors an experience unlike any other in South Africa, let alone the continent, this summer! Take a virtual ride in our immersive digital full-dome theatre – with screenings such as Perfect Little Planet, Dream to Fly and Asteroid Mission Extreme, we’ll keep you coming back for more! Shows are available daily from Tuesdays to Sundays, and on Wednesday evenings.

Get in touch with your inner artist and escape the heat at the Iziko South African National Gallery – with three exhibitions currently on show, we’re certain that there’s something unique for all art enthusiasts! Hidden Treasures presents works from the Gallery’s permanent collection (some of which have never been seen before!) and the ancient art of abstraction is explored in Assessing Abstraction. Not the Usual Suspects comes as a tribute to the renowned Market Photo Workshop, showcasing the work of over 100 artists and asking us to consider notions of access and visibility. It’s a dialogue between archives and public histories, us and you!

Reflect on the origins of our roots at the Iziko Slave Lodge and uncover our history – from life in Ancient Egypt with Kemet, to the extraordinary story of The Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794; and learn about the experience of colonial subjects through a specific focus on the lives of three women in Under Cover of Darkness. Delve into stories at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, where the narratives of Cape Town’s slaves, after their emancipation, are told.

For a journey of discovery full of adventure, and to #BeatTheHeat this summer, be sure not to miss out at Iziko Museums of South Africa!
