ComArt’s Festival of Carols concert, now in its 16th year, takes place on Sunday 4 December at 4pm at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35th Street, Elsies River. It celebrates the start of the festive season with music and poetry and will be recorded by RSG to be broadcast on the radio station on Christmas Day at 5pm.

The ComArt Choristers, under the musical direction of Andre Thomas, will as always delight audience members with a programme of festive season carols, choral music and solo performances by Choir members and guest artists, as well as poetry readings by acclaimed writers. Wiseman of the East, one of Cape Town’s longest standing Christmas bands, will once again feature in the line-up.

The Festival of Carols has become a significant fixture on the local music calendar. It celebrates the start of the festive season, inspiring a spirit of joy and goodwill, while honouring local heritage and encouraging a sense of community including the much-loved communal carol singing.

“The festive season is a time of giving, and ComArt will be raising funds and food to present families in our local communities with food hampers to celebrate Christmas,” says ComArt Executive Director John Davids. “There has been much turbulence within our society this year and with the Festival of Carols, we come together to promote unity, identity, heritage and dialogue.

“The programme will again feature a selection of festive season favourites, communal carol singing, poetry readings, lighting candles to commemorate the freeing of slaves, persons living or affected by HIV/AIDS, and 16 days of activism against the abuse of women and children. We are also delighted to be welcoming Wiseman of the East back to join us in this joyful celebration.”

The ComArt Choir was established by and under the musical direction of Professor Virginia Davids in 1998 and it has played a critical role in keeping choral music alive in Elsies River.
