Mama Dorothy Masuka is at Sophiatown the Mix for Sophiatown Jazz Encounters – “Conversations with an African icon” on Friday 20 April 19:00.
We’re always commenting on how we miss the chance to hear our own icons share stories and experiences from their lives with us directly: so, don’t miss this!
Mama Dorothy has been part of the soundtrack of our lives: from exile and from home, Mama D’s music – performed by international and African artists all over the world – has accompanied us.
This special evening begins with Mama D in conversation with renowned jazz journalist and writer Gwen Ansell, with vocalist Titi
Luzipo, Jazz Historian Dr Lindelwa Dalamba from Wits Music School, and guitarist and music academic Bheki Khoza. We’ll explore the legacy of Mama Dorothy’s writing and musical influence on current and future generations.
The conversation is followed by a live performance by Mama Dorothy follows, with Titi Luzipo and Bheki Khoza.
This event is part of International Jazz Day South Africa.
Sophiatown the Mix hosts regular jazz and Afro-fusion musicians from across the Continent, offering special spaces in this historic suburb for an up close and personal interaction with artists and cultural innovators.
