The introductory course introduces students to the pedagogical understandings of oppression and Augusto Boal’s principles, pedagogy and practice of TO with the aim to equip them with critical thinking skills around the issue of oppression and its complexity. It gives background to Boal’s method from Paulo Freire’s, Berolt Brecht and Karl Marx’s theoretical underpinnings. The course starts to explore, from a theoretical perspective, the specific Boal techniques of games and exercises, Image Theatre and Forum Theatre. It will prepare students to start thinking about the power of TO as a methodology that can mediate and encourage development, dialogue around issues of oppression in their communities. It will provide a base for the subsequent Intermediate and Advanced levels of the TO course.
