Productions that the Fugard Theatre presented in 2018 have received fourteen nominations in the recently announced shortlist for the 54th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards.
Nominated shows that were presented by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre include West Side Story, King Kong, Langarm, The Road to Mecca, The Demon Bride and Oleanna.
Greg Karvellas, The Fugard Theatre’s Artistic Director, received a nomination for his direction of David Mamet’s hard-hitting two-hander Oleanna, for which Alan Committee and Nicole Fortuin also received nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Play for their roles as John and Carol respectively. Chris Pienaar has been nominated for his Set Design for the production.
South African legend Sandra Prinsloo was nominated for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Miss Helen in Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca, which was also directed by Karvellas. Her co-star Emily Child was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress in a Play Award for her role as Elsa Barlow while Saul Radomsky was nominated for his Set Design for The Road to Mecca.
David Kramer’s new hit musical, Langarm, which is playing until 3 March, scooped three nominations for Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Elton Landrew as Eddie and Best Lead Actress in a Musical for Kim Louis as Dinah as well as for Rushney Ferguson as Angelina.
Continuing in the musical theatre categories, Desmond Dube has been nominated as Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role as Pop in the iconic King Kong, while Daniel Mpilo Richards was nominated in the same category for his role as Bernardo in West Side Story.
Acclaimed sound artist James Webb received a nomination for Best Sound Design for his soundscape on Louis Viljoen’s The Demon Bride.
Kevin Hack received a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical as Tony in West Side Story, a production in which he has performed an incredible 500 times in various presentations of the show.

The winners of the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town on Sunday 10 March. Limited tickets are available to the public.
