Acclaimed guitarist James Grace plays Journey to Spain at the new Highgate Wine Estate Cellar in the KZN Midlands on Saturday 4 August at 6.30pm.Journey to Spain is an all-Spanish programme featuring music from Grace’s forthcoming album Andaluza – Music of Spain III.
Continuing his exploration of original and transcribed Spanish music for the guitar, James, a three-time SAMA nominee, will perform Joaquin Turina’s evocative ‘Fandanguillo’, one of the first works originally commissioned by and composed for Andres Segovia.
Also included in the programme is a selection of works by Eduardo Sainz de la Maza, brother of Regino Sainz de la Maza who was the dedicatee of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo also features in the programme, with the virtuosic and hauntingly beautiful Invocacion y Danza, a homage to Manuel de Falla.
For this concert and in the recording studio James plays on a locally-built classical guitar by leading South African luthier Hans van den Berg. James will also perform works from his previous two Spanish albums, Granada and Sevilla – Music of Spain II, showcasing works by composers including Albeniz, Granados and Tarrega.
A selection of James Grace’s solo albums will be on sale after the concert, including his 2017 SAMA-nominated release; Chilled.
Highgate Wine Estate is situated at the intersection of the Lions River and Dargle Roads, adjacent to Piggly Wiggly.
