Market Theatre FoundationThe Market Theatre Foundation and the Coloured Cube are 2 dynamic arts organisations that can offer 8 currently unemployed young people from previously disadvantaged communities the opportunity to re-join the workforce through a sponsored internship programme.

The 8 successful applicants will have a 12-month fixed contract at R3,500 p.m. which will allow them to benefit from being associated with and gaining hands-on experience at the prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution in the Market Theatre Foundation as well as a dynamic, innovative and lateral thinking creative space in The Coloured Cube. By taking up the various internship positions offered by The Coloured Cube and the Market Theatre Foundation the successful interns will work with interesting colleagues, learn a wide range of skills that will provide invaluable work experience and possibly connect with people who could offer future permanent career opportunities in the creative arts industries – as well as in alternate career fields.

Knowledge of or an interest in the creative arts would be an advantage but is not a requirement.

INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

The following 7 internships are on offer at The Coloured Cube and Market Theatre Foundation

  • CNC AND LASER CUTTER OPERATOR – The Coloured Cube
    The Creative co-LAB is a physical creative hub based in Benrose (2km from Maboneng) that the Coloured Cube is establishing. Laser and vinyl cutting will be services offered to the public, as well as assist with in-house manufacture and design work. This position suits an industrial design graduate who would like the opportunity to learn more about these machines, as well as have access to The Coloured Cube’s Makerspace to further their own ideas and ideas within TCC.Position requires:

    • 8am – 5pm : Monday – Friday (unless otherwise stipulated)
    • Industrial design and machining experience.
    • TCC works on a variety of projects linked to urban regeneration, making and public space interventions.
    • Applicant must have knowledge of rendering, computer work and design work.
    • Further training will be given through a partnership with Perfect Laser South Africa. The intern will work at their premises for 2 weeks, shadowing their team and learning more about CNC routing and laser cutting.
  • FACILITATION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT – The Coloured Cube
    The Coloured Cube works on a range of creative projects in the city of Johannesburg. Working with a variety of stakeholders such as corporates, government, creatives and specific communities. The applicant needs to be flexible, creative, organised and on-their -toes – the job will include hosting workshops sometimes, report writing and managing projects.Position requires:

    • 8am – 5pm : Monday – Friday (unless otherwise stipulated)
    • Project management experience/qualification
    • Facilitation experience/qualification
    • Duties will include, but not limited to:
    • Project management of specific projects
    • Workshop facilitation when required
    • Report writing and documentation
    • Car licence
  • LIBRARY ASSISTANT – Market Photo Workshop
    The applicant will perform administrative duties to meet the information needs of all stakeholders within the Photo Workshop’s library space. This position will suit a Library and Information science graduate or related qualification who would like the opportunity to gain more experience in the running of a Library service, as well as have access to the creative arts information and learning space.Position requires:

    • 9:30am – 4pm : Thursday – Saturday (unless otherwise required)
    • Work closely with the student administration and support units to ensure optimal access and use of the library.
    • Other duties include:
      • Managing library material and equipment inventories
      • Answer enquiries electronically, telephonically and in person
      • Issues return, reserve and renew library materials using manual and automated systems
      • Performing preliminary accessioning – adding the basic detail of new works to the library catalogue
      • Carry out reference interviews, catalogue searches and internet searches, and directing clients to the relevant materials
      • Assisting tutors and staff with researching content for classes, media releases, catalogues and publications.
  • SOUND DESIGNER – Market Theatre
    Applicant will be a member of the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team and be involved in the staging of Market Theatre productions specifically from a sound design perspective. The applicant will be working with Market Theatre’s sound technician to do setups for events, productions and outside events.
    Applicant will require technical experience in sound engineering, sound set up, patching and mixing. Must have a certificate in Sound engineering or previous experience in working with sound equipment for events or theatrical productions.Position Requires:

    • 8am – 5pm : Monday – Friday. However, during technical week, of a show the applicant may be required to work after hours and on weekends. May have to operate shows in the evenings after hours. Work week will be limited to 45 hours per week.
    • This position will suit a sound engineering graduate or a person with previous sound experience.
    • Programming cues with a mixing console for a shows or events.
    • Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events.
    • Maintaining the sound equipment in good safe working condition.
    • Operating within current health and safety regulations to ensure a safe environment.
    • Working in a creative environment, interpreting scripts, sourcing sound effects and work on soundscapes for various productions.
    • Will have the opportunity to work and network with professional creatives in the entertainment industry.
  • PRODUCING ADMINISTRATOR – Market Theatre
    The applicant will work in the Producer’s office and gain in-depth knowledge of the administration behind professional theatrical productions. This position requires certificates and experience in project management, administration, basic accounting, communication and project management skills as well as being computer literate including Microsoft office.Position Requires:

    • 8am – 5pm : Monday – Friday (unless otherwise stipulated)
    • Applicants will assist Producer and Assistant Producer with the administration of quotations and contracts
    • Assist with budget management, invoicing and reconciliation of production costs
    • Assist with logistics management related to events at the MTF
    • Assist with production reports for external producers and stakeholders
    • Assist with additional responsibilities as delegated by the Producer and Artistic Director
    • Act as minute secretary for production and artistic meetings
    • Assist Production department with the drafting and maintenance of schedules
    • Attend Production and Artistic meetings
    • Liaise with associated departments – Front of House, Technical, Brand & Communications
    • Prepare information for Webtickets
    • Client liaison via telephone, e-mail and in person
    • Applicants will must be organised, willing to work in a team, able to take instructions as well as work independently.
    • Multiple languages a bonus but applicant must be fluent in English
  • SOCIAL MEDIA OFFICER – Windybrow Arts Centre
    The applicant will be members of the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team. The applicants will work closely within the MTF’s team to communicate effectively with external stakeholders through publicity and marketing in order to develop and reinforce a distinctive brand for the Windybrow Arts Centre on social media and related digital platforms. A relevant diploma or related NQ certificate in media and marketing studies would be an advantage.Position Requires:

    • 9am – 5pm : Mondays – Fridays (unless otherwise stipulated). Attendance at events will require flexibility but the work week will be limited to 45 hours per week.
    • Develop and maintain project blogs.
    • Co-develop content to articulate the various activities of the Windybrow Arts Centre in social media and other media platforms
    • Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
    • Ensure the Windybrow Arts Centre’s projects are well publicised in media, including on social media platforms.
    • Must be Apple Mac computer literate
  • IN HOUSE MARKETING ASSISTANT – Market Theatre Laboratory & Ramolao Makhene Theatre
    The applicant will be a junior brand and communications manager to assist with the marketing and communication around upcoming events and programmes at the Market Laboratory and the Ramolao Makhene Theatre, as well as documenting all events and programmes for social media.Position Requires:

    • 10am – 4 pm : Mondays – Fridays. However, needs to be available in the evenings for documentation of events for social media.
    • An understanding of marketing, social media, graphic design, theatre and copy-writing.
    • Basic marketing training is a must but an in depth theatre knowledge and a passion for theatre is a bonus.
    • Applicants who can write in English and 1 or 2 African languages is advantageous.
    • Basic administrative skills, computer literacy and social media literacy
    • Good people skills as the applicant will be liaising with performers, productions, students and management.
  • AUDIENCE & MARKETING DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT – Market Theatre
    The applicant will be a member of the Market Theatre Foundation’s Brand & Communications team and will work towards growing an audience base for the Market Theatre. The applicants will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic marketing and sales related environment. The applicant will have the opportunity to interact with the general public as well as educational institutions in promoting and finding audiences for Market Theatre productions. A BA or Marketing certificate is required.Position Requires:

    • 8am – 5pm : Monday – Friday (unless otherwise stipulated
    • Administration, communication and computer skills and an understanding of marketing and copy writing
    • Applicants will work in conjunction with the Audience Development Officer
    • Update and maintain audience data bases
    • Monitor sales trends for productions and provide input to the artistic team
    • Read scripts and offer input to the marketing department for drafting of press releases
    • Work with graphic designer on production posters
    • Work in conjunction with the Producer and directors to identify and target specific markets to boost ticket sales
    • Assist on marketing all up-coming events at the Market Theatre as well as documenting all events.
    • Position will include a performance-based incentive on reaching sales targets
    • Organised, willing to work in a team, and excited about theatre and theatre education.
    • Possess good people skills and they will be liaising with performers, producers, students and management.
