When Joburg Ballet stages South African choreographer Veronica Paeper’s fiery and passionate production of Carmen – The Ballet in Johannesburg from 6 to 15 April, the company will be performing to a live orchestra for the first time in many years. The relaunched Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Brandon Phillips, joins the dancers at Joburg Theatre for all ten performances, bringing composer Georges Bizet’s famous music vividly to life.

Cape Town-born Phillips studied conducting in the US at Northwestern University in Chicago, and as an intern with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. In 2015 he was appointed resident conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. He has conducted internationally and also works regularly with a range of SA orchestras and choirs, including the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, Unisa Symphony Orchestra, the Free State Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town.

“Carmen marks the first time in many years that Joburg Ballet will be performing with a full orchestra,” said artistic director Iain MacDonald. “As a dancer, I was often privileged to perform with a live orchestra and know from my own career what a thrilling and enriching experience it will be, for both the company and our audiences.”

You can also join Joburg Ballet at the Carmen Open Day on Saturday 24 March from 10:00 to 13:00 for a chance to experience their rehearsal process, meet members of the creative team and see the company in action. Tickets are R100 and can be booked directly through Edgar Moagi on 011-877 6898 or edgar@joburgballet.com.

Joburg Ballet offers a range of affordable tickets for Carmen, including 50% off on opening night, two budget priced morning matinees at 11:00, when all seats are just R100, and discounts for pensioners and groups.
