Social media went abuzz following Lebohang’s debut album release on Freedom Day, with the album’s title quickly becoming number two trending topic.
Following the announcement that the much-anticipated album was releasing on Friday, many waited for midnight on Thursday to be the first ones to get it online. They were not disappointed as each soon picked their favourite track from the 20 songs that the album offers. Word spread quickly on social media and by morning the album was number 5 on the local Gospel Music Albums iTunes charts. By late afternoon it had shot up to number two, only topped by Hillsong. On Google Play, it went one better, becoming number one, much to the surprise of many. It stayed like that over the weekend.
Lebohang confessed that she was a little bit nervous, relieved and excited before the release. She did not know how the album would be received. Simply entitled ‘Christ Revealed’, the album was recorded live in 2017 at the City Life Centre in Johannesburg. It is Lebohang’s first solo project; she spent the last few years doing backing vocals for various local and international artists. In 2017 she won an Independent National Gospel Music Award (INGOMA) for Best backing vocalist.
Various leading artists also took to social media to congratulate Lebo about the album. “My heart cannot express how grateful I am for this piece of work @lebohangkgapola, Siyabonga!! Well done girl! Amazing work,” wrote multi-award-winning Khaya Mthethwa.
“God is doing a new thing through worship in our country and I strongly believe that it starts with this album by @lebohangkgapola. I find myself in tears every time I listen to it. This album is pure, full of the Word and it ushers one effortlessly into the presence of God. Hope it blesses you as much as it has been a blessing to me this morning,” wrote another multi-award-winning music great, Loyiso Bala on his Instagram.
Well-known award-winning singer, songwriter and producer Nqubeko Mbatha added: “You’re not mad at me, You love me madly”, words on the song by @lebohangkgapola. What a blessing. Well done sisi”. “@Lebohangkgapola, The World Awaits. This is your heart. First song I went to, can’t skip. May God bless you,” wrote leading gospel artist, Mahalia Buchanan. “Awesome work,” said the SAMA award-winning duo of Bongi & Collin. “Christ Revealed by our sis @lebohangkgapola is finally out!! Available on all digital stores. It is ‘ugly cry’ good. Lock yourself in a room with this album and have an encounter with God,” wrote members of the well-known gospel group, We Will Worship. Many other messages filled up social media platforms from music lovers who were all equally blessed by the album.
Lebohang capped her weekend roundup by performing as an opening act at the Stellar award-winning and Grammy-nominated Todd Dulaney’s Worship Night in Johannesburg. To top it all, she got to perform a song with the American singer during the concert.
While it’s still early days, judging from the reviews it received, this album is a must have for any gospel music lover. It’s currently only available on online stores but should be hitting local shelves sometime in June, together with its DVD. Those who cannot wait till then are able to get copies directly from Lebo and her team. They will be doing roadshows at several malls around the country.
