Martin Bester is a man of many talents. Not only is he an award-winning radio presenter, television presenter, actor and MC, but also a talented musician. His new single has just been released and promises to follow in the successful footsteps of previous hits, like Wat Weet Ek Tog, Ou Spoor and Sterre.
Ek Het Geweet is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head immediately, invites you to sing along and makes you want to get up and dance. The singer describes it as a pop song with a punk rock vibe. “I like honest people who are straightforward about their feelings. Nobody has time to play and that’s what the song is about. It has an exciting tune and is something that everyone can relate to,” he says. “I want listeners to connect with my songs and apply them to their own lives. I love it when my music ‘speaks’ to people on the dance floor, while on road trip in the car or when home alone.” The singer does not want to give away too much about the music video being planned for the single, but says that he would love to shoot it on a rooftop in the city, with a beautiful sunset in the background.
Music has always been an integral part of Martin’s life, from school choir to his first band at varsity and the ones that followed. He is one of the most popular radio presenters in the country, with three awards for Best Afternoon Drive Presenter for the Martin Bester Drive Show and received a Huisgenoot Tempo Award for Radio Presenter of the Year.
The artist has presented numerous television shows. As an actor, he has made appearances in movies such as Pretville, Vrou soek Boer and Sonskyn Beperk. Martin is also the lead singer of the SAMA nominated band Kinky Robot, whose first single, Hobie Beach, was recently included in an English text book for grade elevens. His first solo album, Vir Die Eerste Keer, was also an instant success and delivered many chart-topping hits.
His job takes him to popular stages, festivals and functions locally and abroad, including KKNK, Innibos and Hammersmith Apollo in London. Events he has been involved in include:
The SA Sport Hall of Fame Induction Event of the 1995 Springboks and Nelson Mandela, the London goes SA concert series, 2010 Soccer World Cup events, The Colour Run, the Tempo, Pendoring, SAMA and Ghoema Awards, The Titans Cricket Union Charity Ball and numerous local and international music concerts and corporates. When asked where he gets the inspiration for his songs from, he says: “It comes from everyday things, as I see, hear and experience them. Sometimes I get an idea when I look at the clouds or when I hear the wind blowing on a dirt road. In recent months, I wrote a lot about things that were happening in my life…”
As a musician, he appreciates the work of a wide variety of artists, from Queen to Theuns Jordaan and U2 to Francois van Coke. The music industry has taught Martin Bester that it is important to just be yourself, even if it takes people longer to understand where you are coming from. Fortunately for him, he has managed to win over the hearts and ears of fans since the very start of his career. Ek Het Geweet is a catchy song that will most certainly be a hit on the dance floor and without which no party playlist would be complete.
