MIDM co-stars in groundbreaking collaboration


MIDM is collaborating with two leading SA dance companies – Joburg Ballet and VDT – on a major new production, Big City, Big Dreams.

Iconic dance company, Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM), is collaborating with two leading South African dance companies – Joburg Ballet and Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) – on a major new production, Big City, Big Dreams, which premieres at Joburg Theatre on Friday 28 July 2017.

Big City, Big Dreams is told through the eyes of a decorated creative team of three choreographers – Sunnyboy Motau (MIDM), Shannon Glover (Joburg Ballet) and Lulu Mlangeni (VDT) – who are working with renowned stage director Fiona Ramsay to develop this cutting-edge dance work.

“Collaboration is one of the most important aspects to help a choreographer grow because you learn from your peers and become a better artist,” Motau shares on the significance of working together.

Big City, Big Dreams tells the story of a young man played by MIDM rising star Eugene Mashiane. He steps confidently onto the first rungs of Joburg’s corporate ladder, only to discover an unexpected and fascinating new window into the world of dance opening up to him.

Mashiane shares his experience preparing for this ground-breaking production.

“This has been a learning curve for me as I’m more of an African contemporary dancer but I had to learn some classical ballet which adds to my skills set,” he said.

With almost 40 years in African contemporary dance training and performance on local and global stages, MIDM is an ideal and credible partner for driving world-class, African-led approaches to dance and choreography as a result these collaborative opportunities.

This exhilarating dance work fuses various genres from classical ballet to contemporary African dance and street dance, and combines high-powered technique with vibrant emotion set to an original score by composer Nik Sakellarides.

The stage sets and lighting flow from the creative mind of Wilhelm Disbergen, while the dancers will be dressed in sleek urban clothes from costume designer Noluthando Moropa.

Ticket offers at attractive prices include a 50% discount on all tickets for opening night on Friday 28 July, a 20% off special on all tickets for Saturday and a set price of R80 for the morning matinees on Tuesday and Wednesday, 1 and 2 August. For all other performances, standard ticket prices (R180 – R450) apply. Pensioners will be eligible for 15% off and group bookings will get tickets for less 10%. Joburg Ballet also has a special booking offer of free tickets for tertiary level learners. Students will be required to present a valid student card from a tertiary education institution in person at the Joburg Theatre box office before any performance to claim two free best-available tickets for Big City, Big Dreams (subject to availability on the day).
