Lulu Mlangeni

Lulu Mlangeni appears with Bafikile Sedibe in the dance piece The Encounter on the Mannie Manim stage at the Market Theatre from 21 to 24 March.Mlangeni last performed at the Market Theatre in ‘Confined’, which she also choreographed, in a successful 2018 showcase through the DAC Incubator Programme.

The Encounter is a duet in which Mlangeni appears with Bafikile Sedibe in a dialogue that explores subtleties that undermine the potential for a smooth flow of relationships between genders.

In The Encounter this seasoned duo is bent on trampling the tenuous line that stealthily continues to set creatures of coexistence apart as if they are an accident of nature and the universe. Human anatomy and physiology are attributes that are meant to swing the pendulum in a manner that should dispel gender stereotypes. The platform of harmony derives its stability from the magic of equal attraction between the weak and the strong.

Given the luminous personal profiles of Mlangeni and Sedibe and taking their lived experiences as compounded by extensive research, The Encounter is simply a production that will underscore Mlangeni’s creative rise and Sedibe’s artistic mileage.

Lulu is a talented well-travelled multi-award-winning choreographer, teacher, dancer and performing artist. Bafikile also has a career that spans years in the industry as a dance tutor, dance creator and has toured extensively as a performer in various productions.

This is a dance piece that would live up to the expectations of enthusiastic dance followers.

Emphasis: other than the matinee that starts at 15h15 on Sunday 24 March, all shows will start at 20h15.

The Encounter project has been made possible with support from the National Arts Council (NAC).
