Violent protests in Mahikeng have seen at least one person killed. The violence broke out earlier this week in the North West Province in protest at alleged corruption by North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo. The violence resulted in the looting of many shops, as well as the looting and burning to the ground of the Mmabana Arts Centre.
South African President and president of the ruling African National Congress Cyril Ramaphosa, cut short an international roadshow to address the violence in the North West town of Mahikeng. An urgent meeting was called by senior tri-partite alliance leaders, current and former members of the provincial leadership.
The president has promised continued talks with the community and provincial leaders to resolve the residents concerns over poor service delivery and corruption.
The Mmabana Arts Centre has developed many leading lights in the South African Arts Community including Cassper Nyovest who learned and performed at the centre. A production celebrating the life of struggle icon Albertina Sisulu began at the centre on Wednesday night.
