Moving into Dance Mophatong takes Romeo & Juliet: Rebellion and Johannesburg (R&J) to the Orient Occident Dance Festival in Italy.
South Africa’s most prominent dance company, Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) and celebrated choreographer, Jessica Nupen, are taking their off-beat dance collaboration – the acclaimed Romeo & Juliet: Rebellion and Johannesburg (R&J) – global as they get ready to jet off to Italy to perform at the prestigious Orient Occident Dance Festival.
R&J first premiered last year in Germany, where Nupen is based, on a five-week tour around the country where it wowed audiences. R&J also opened this year’s Dance Umbrella 2016 in February.
The contemporary dance piece is a bold and provocative re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, set to the backdrop of a transforming street subculture in Johannesburg using emerging new dance forms such as Pantsula, Sbhujwa and Skhothane true to MIDM’s focus on Afrofusion.
