The award-winning, internationally-acclaimed NYC solo show, “HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr” returns to South Africa this May, showing in Durban, Cape Town, Khayelitsha, George and Johannesburg.
Written and performed by Heather Massie, its mission is to empower women, to encourage young women in science and technology, and to inspire the audience to make the world a better place.
Massie recently completed a run of the show at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and in the ZulFest Science Festival at the Unizulu Science Centre in Richards Bay. She continues the African tour of the show in Khayelitsha with the Thope Foundation, and the Makukhanye Art Room; in Cape Town at the Alexander Bar, Cafe & Theatre, hosted by Women in Tech; in George at the George Arts Theatre; and in Johannesburg at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre. Massie will present the show, and work with artists and learners in the various locations in workshops and panel discussions.
HEDY! The Life & Inventions of Hedy Lamarr explores the life, inventions and person of Hedy Lamarr, Viennese-born Hollywood film star of the 1930s-1950s. Known as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World, Hedy Lamarr stored away knowledge of munitions while married to Austrian arms dealer, Fritz Mandl. She employed this knowledge to support the US Navy’s war effort during WWII by inventing The Secret Communication System with composer George Antheil to make torpedoes more accurate. Also referred to as Frequency Hopping or Spread Spectrum Technology, her invention is used today in cellphones, WiFi, CDMA, GPS, Bluetooth and a myriad of other wireless systems.
