District Six 50th Commemoration print exchange
On 11 February 2016, it was fifty years since District Six was declared a White Group Area under Apartheid, in 1966. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary, Peneria George of the Department of Surface Design at the Peninsula University of Technology initiated a partnership with the District Six Museum inviting 50 artists, both local and international, to participate in the compilation of a print exchange portfolio using the District Six theme as an inspiration.
The concept of a print exchange is to exchange artworks amongst artists. The artworks are editioned prints based on the number of participants. The works are presented in a portfolio case which each participant and supporting organisation and / institution will receive. A portfolio will be donated to the District Six Museum collection which represents the contribution made by the participating artists’ commitment to the memory of forced removals.
This portfolio of 50 prints was officially unveiled in an exhibition at the District Six Homecoming Centre on 8 November 2016.
Generous support for this project was provided by the Sanlam Foundation, Business Arts South Africa, the Peninsula University of Technology, Meltt Pty Ltd and the District Six Museum. In addition, Jonathan Comerford of Hard Ground Printmakers sponsored the use of his press and his technical knowhow by the temporary installation of a printing studio in the District Six Museum Homecoming Centre. George Wentzel offered his expertise in constructing the portfolio boxes and Wizardz Print & Design supported the printing of the accompanying catalogue.
