On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Spanoudes spoke to Clara Vaughan about The Market Laboratory‘s Pop iCherri and Hani at the WITS 969 Festival.
Pop iCherri and Hani.
On 1 June 2017, Clara Vaughan was promoted from Education Officer at the Market Laboratory to Head of the Market Laboratory. Vaughan discusses some of her plans for the lab, and two productions that The Market Theatre Laboratory are staging on the WITS 969 Festival this year.
Love, lust, beliefs and perceptions, emotion and devotion, religion and culture all come crashing together in the Market Theatre Laboratory production of Pop iCherri.
This devised play explores themes surrounding virginity- … a loaded word and subject in society. Women have been stoned over it, scholarships have been awarded for it, big bucks have been paid to take it, and boys have become men because of it. What’s all the fuss? This original piece of theatre has been devised by a talented group of twelve theatre-makers who also happen to be second year students at the Market Theatre Laboratory.
The Market Theatre Laboratory presents Hani, the story of Chris Hani’s life. Inspired by hit American musical Hamilton, the Hani story is told through the contemporary song forms of hip-hop, rap and ballad by a dynamic and energetic young cast. Through this fresh form, we grapple with the gap Hani left behind and are inspired by how we can use his legacy to move forward at a time where we face enormous political and social challenges.
