On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Spanoudes spoke to Director Jade Bowers about Goggas on stage at the National Children’s Theatre.
Back by popular demand, National Children’s Theatre (NCT) will once again stage GOGGAS! – A South African Musical by Gillian Katz and adapted by Francois Theron. This production will run for a third season, during the December School Holidays.
The production has been made possible by part of a grant from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).
LADY CAROLINE, a beautiful British butterfly, has accidentally landed in South Africa. Join ANTONY the picnic ant on his travels through Jozi to help her find her way home. On their journey they meet typical local “goggas” like LOLA the Ladybird, Connie the Chameleon, and Bumble Bee, the stick insects: TWIGGY AND LEAFY, the ever pompous old QUEEN BEE, HUGO the “Joller” BEULAH the Black Widow spider and various other colourful creatures.
LADY CAROLINE not only gets introduced to wonderfully typical South African goggas and characters but she also gets to sample some local delicacies like biltong and chakalaka! She learns about the cultures and different languages and even manages to make new friends and find love. Does she want to return to London?
A superb multi-talented cast will transport the audience into the land of goggas. The set and costumes are fabulous and the singing is excellent. Well known songs like Mango Groove’s Special Star, Johnny Clegg’s Scatterling of Africa will delight both children and adults.
A simple story full of feel-good messages will keep both children and adults delighted and enthralled.
