An exciting young Italian pianist, Alessandro Taverna, will provide a breath of fresh air at the start of the Johannesburg Musical Society’s spring/summer season.
On Saturday 4 August, Alessandro Taverna takes to the stage at 20:00 in the Linder Auditorium, Parktown, to continue the 2018 JMS season after the winter break.
Born in Venice, Alessandro Taverna’s career got off to a brilliant start when he was awarded top prizes at prestigious piano competitions such as the Leeds International and the Busoni International. His playing of Chopin’s First Piano Concerto was described as being ‘suffused with grave beauty and flawless minutes of poetry’ (The Independent) and he is now heard in halls such as the Teatro all Scala in Milan, La Fenice in Venice, the Berlin Konzerthaus , Royal Festival Hall in London, and in the Salle Cortot in Paris.
In 2009 he opened Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival in the US, after which he was immediately invited to accompany the maestro on a tour through Germany and Austria. His life has been documented by BBC4.
Alessandro Taverna’s musicianship – which is noted for its ‘sheer musicality and tonal perfection’ – will be displayed in a programme which includes Chopin’s lovely Barcarolle Opus 60. He will also play Debussy’s Images, Ravel’s Miroirs, and will end with Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänzer – a work which has not been heard in Johannesburg for many years.
Tickets for this concert can be booked through Computicket or bought at the door on the evening of Saturday 4 August from 19:00 onwards. There are substantial discounts for students and scholars, but please note that there is NO credit card facility at the Linder box office.
