Pianist Alessandro Taverna plays a thrilling and romantic programme for the Johannesburg Musical Society on Saturday 13 August at the Linder Auditorium at 20:00.
After the July recess, the Johannesburg Musical Society swings back into action with a thrilling and romantic evening of music. On Saturday 13 August, at 20:00 in the Linder Auditorium, Parktown, the brilliant young Venetian pianist Alessandro Taverna will continue the 2016 season with a recital featuring two of the greatest romantic composers – Chopin and Liszt.
Alessandro Taverna, winner of the Minnesota International Piano Competition and of the Arturo Benedetti Michelangelo Prize, has also created a stir with his magisterial performances of Chopin at the Leeds International Competition and at the London International Piano Competition – at both of which he took important prizes.
He has studied with great mentors such as Sergio Perticaroli, Malcom Bilsom, Arie Vardi and Fou Ts’ong, has played with eminent orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, the Hallé Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin and the Royal Liverpool Orchestra and he performs throughout Europe and America. His playing has been described as ‘suffused with grave beauty’ and ‘flawless poetry’.
Alessandro Taverna will be playing all four Ballades of Chopin, as well as the Tarantella di Bravura and the Mephisto Waltz of Liszt. His recital ends with Liszt’s delicate and lovely Rigoletto Concert Paraphrase, based on the famous Quartet from Verdi’s opera.
Tickets can be booked at Computicket, or bought at the Linder box office from one hour before the start of the performance on Saturday 13 August. Students get substantial discounts – but please note that there is no credit card facility at the box office.
