Soweto Gospel Choir has won the Best World Music Album award for their new recording “Freedom” at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
The Soweto Gospel Choir took home their 3rd Grammy Award at the annual awards ceremony that took place on Sunday night in Los Angeles. The 61st annual Grammy Awards were hosted by Alicia Keys.
This was Soweto Gospel Choir`s fifth nomination in the World Music Album category and have won the award three times.
The award was received by album producer Diniloxolo Ndlakuse, Shimmy Jiyane, Mary Mulovhedzi and Mulalo Mulovhedzion on behalf of Soweto Gospel Choir. Mulalo Mulovhedzi’s late father David Mulovhedzi co-founded the group 17 years ago alongside producer/director Beverly Bryer.
FREEDOM, the Grammy Award winning album, was recorded in 2018 as part of the group`s contribution to the 100 Years of Mandela celebrations and features a selection of South African struggle songs as well as a version of the much loved Johnny Clegg hit Asimbonanga.
