Joburg Theatre Youth Development presents The Cleaners in the Space.com from June 16 to 19.
Shortly after the waste and garbage crisis in the country and more notably in the city of Johannesburg, we find two young men, uZibi (dirt) and uMshanelo (broom), cleaners both in profession and bloodline; offspring to a victim of the 2007 ‘Reitz Four’ incident at the University of Free State.
Now cleaners in the theatre, uZibi and noMshanelo take it upon themselves to clean not only dirt and rubbish, but the futile and hopeless labour that is society. Although their fate is scorned as a result of their yesterday, uZibi and noMshanelo find peace recollecting and reminiscing about that same yesterday; this allows them to clean not only their consciences from bitterness and hatred of the atrocities that befell their predecessors, but to clean yesterday in its entirety, to clean today, and clean tomorrow.
They continue to clean.
