In association with Concerts SA, Jozi-hailing eclectic outfit The Muffinz start their national tour in Bloemfontein before heading to KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
Currently in their 7th year of existence, the 4-piece band presents The Muffinz On The Road To: Where You Are’, a month-long touring project which includes live performances and music workshops.
Asked about their upcoming tour, The Muffinz say: “We are excited about our upcoming mini tour called ‘The Muffinz On The Road To: Where You Are’. We will be sharing with audiences our take on how The Muffinz sound has evolved to where it is. We will be coming to ‘Where You Are’ as that is the title of our new single”.
With no less than five SAMA nominations under their belts and two full length albums, the quartet released in February their new single ‘Where You Are’. Written by The Muffinz, the song is produced by Simphiwe Kulla and Geoffrey Tazenda Chitima and mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling EQ who brought artworks from Rihanna, Drake, Sean Paul, Angelique Kidjo and Kesha’s to life.
“‘Where You Are’ speaks about love and decision making. Although we don’t choose who we love, we can choose who we spend more time with or even an eternity with…And the song speaks on the phenomena of “feeling someone”, it’s beyond hearing them, touching them, kissing them, but rather a deeper connection that maintains fidelity transcending space and time to reach wherever the lover may be” – The Muffinz.
Ask each member of the band how they define their music and the responses are as varied as their personalities. Former bassist of the Karabo Moeketsi used to describe the sound as calls it: “Hybrid African music on steroids”. For lead electric guitarist Sfiso Atomza Buthelezi, “Liberated Afro-Retro” is more fitting a description. “The music is cosmopolitan as is the Johannesburg that The Muffinz is native to”, says Mthabisi Sibanda, Zimbabwean migrant who found a home in the band as founding member when he and Buthelezi sang together in an esteemed University of Johannesburg Choir. Lead electric guitarist Simphiwe Simz Kulla terms it “Eclectic soul trip”.
The Muffinz On The Road To: Where You Are Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
