‘The Same Pain’ is a masterfully devised theatre experience on rape culture, where the one-woman show is turned on its head.
A range of characters, creatures and spirits are brought to life on stage, to interrogate the theme of gender-based violence and rape culture.
“The Same Pain” is an hour-long confrontational work of protest theatre that comes at a pivotal time in South Africa. The lead actress’ embodiment of many different characters speaks to the facelessness of violence. There isn’t one type of victim, not one type of abuser, and this reality is seamlessly portrayed in the play. The result is a work that is enchanting, multi-layered, and jarring, yet direct and enlightening.
The play was created to raise awareness about deep-rooted societal traumas, and systemic oppression.
These are real stories. These are every-second-of-everyday stories about power dynamics, substance abuse, bias politics, corrupt legal systems, and defencelessness. These stories come together to unravel the intricacy of rape culture. It is important for us all to speak out, share and own our stories; by facing the raw reality we begin to force the tide of change.
Showing at Soweto Theatre from 7 – 10 February 2019 at 20:00 (Matinee on Sunday 10 February at 15:00).
