In preparation for the World Choir Games, the UJ Choir and Akustika will perform at the Maryvale Catholic Church on 8 June, at 19:30.
These multi award-winning choirs are set to perform a selection of their respective repertoires at this one-night-only performance, including among others, UJ Choir’s Ubi Caritas by Paul Mealor, When the Earth Stands Still by Don McDonald & a medley of traditional African Folk songs. Akustika Chamber Singers bring us Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel by Aaron Dale and Bogoroditse Djevo by Sergei Rachmaninov.
One of the top South African varsity choirs, the 50-member UJ Choir is no stranger to competitive platforms, such as the World Choir Games, which will be hosted in Tshwane in July 2018. Under the helm of acclaimed choirmaster, Renette Bouwer, the UJ Choir is known for competently performing Western as well as African pieces, the latter performed under the stewardship of the dynamic conductor Sidumo Jacobs.
Akustika is a chamber choir, based in Tshwane, consisting of 36 young adults under the leadership of renowned conductor Christo Burger. The choir strives towards the highest level of music production and contributes to the choral community of South Africa through combining visual arts and choral music.
The World Choir Games is the largest international choir competition globally and, for the first time since its inception ten years ago, will be hosted on the African continent. Set to take place in Tshwane from 4 to 14 July, the World Choir Games invites all non-professional choirs of the world to participate. The Games offer fair and realistic competition to experienced competitive choirs, as well as choirs with relatively little international experience. The World Choir Games offers both The Champions Competition and The Open Competition. These two competitions allow choirs the opportunity to participate at the appropriate level.
