Explorers of all ages are invited to see the wonders of South Africa and Africa’s natural history at the Iziko South African Museum. Be amazed by rock art dating back millions of years still visible today, and discover how Africa’s ancient civilisations were able to survive. Take a prehistoric journey with our African dinosaurs and encounter the gigantic great-great-grandfather of all ‘crocs’! The Nature’s Best Photography Africa exhibition takes visitors for a walk on the wild side with the most exquisite photography from across the continent. Runners and festival-goers, the Iziko Mobile Museum will be at the Gugulethu Race on Reconciliation Day, 16 December, and at the Stanford Street Festival on 17 December.
Six amazing exhibitions are on display at the Iziko South African National Gallery (ISANG), each offering something unique for all art enthusiasts.
Hidden Treasures presents works from the Gallery’s permanent collection – some never seen before. The ancient art of abstraction is explored in Assessing Abstraction; while Painted Surfaces showcases groundbreaking research of famous South African paintings, bringing to light the artist’s process.
Derek Bauer’s Alternative Press exhibits fiercely independent and challenging views of the then apartheid government. The black and white photographic exhibition, Footprints, is a culmination of 25 years of work by Andrew Tshabangu. Standard Bank Young Artist 2017, Beth Armstrong’s in perpetuum highlights the use of sculpture to explore different expressions of density and looseness in relation to scale, structure, materiality, space, representation and process.
Children aged 7 – 12 years canvas the wonders of the ISANG on 13 December. Navigate through the current exhibitions with a Gallery Hunt worksheet – and create a 2D mixed media masterpiece. Bookings are essential, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Recollect the origins of our roots at the Iziko Slave Lodge and discover the story behind surnames in My Naam is Februarie. Delve into stories at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum where the narratives of Cape Town’s slaves after their emancipation are told.
