Sophiatown’s spirit alive and growing among young entrepreneurs, musicians and community builders as they ‘build dreams in peaceful ways’.
Every February, Sophiatown’s history is often recalled in public space, because it is the anniversary of when this freehold suburb began to be physically destroyed under apartheid legislation between 1955-1962.
However, Sophiatown’s story did not end there: throughout this year, the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre is inviting South Africans and those who have made South Africa their home, to celebrate the ‘Good Things’ that are happening in Sophiatown today, 11 years after she was renamed by the City of Johannesburg, by getting involved!
Over the last 16 years we have reached thousands of young people with ways to become active citizens, to study, travel, volunteer and to find work. Today we invite you to join us in celebrating the vibrancy that was ‘Sof’town’, by building the future. Visit Sophiatown’s Urban Experience: a walking tour of this special place; mentor a young person starting a business; join our music academy, or share your gifts here for the benefit of others.
Open Community Encounters: Saturday 18 February from 13h00 – 15h00

These are regular conversations which help us imagine a future where our individual and collective being and actions are not shaped by our past anymore, where we connect with others to build the kind of community we all long for.
