The South African State Theatre presents a night of jazz with America’s Jazz veteran Jeff “Siege” Siegel LIVE with a sextet featuring SA’s Feya Faku on 22 June. The Jeff “Siege” Siegel Sextet featuring renowned trumpet and flugelhorn player Feya Faku marks its debut tour to South Africa with an appearance at The State Theatre.
This project was initiated in 2014 following the meeting and ensuing friendship of Siegel and Faku in Woodstock, New York, again months later at the Grahamstown Jazz Festival were Siegel became enchanted with the deeply spiritual power of the music of the region, and the spirit and intensity of Faku’s playing. This resulted in the New York recording of the CD King of Xhosa in 2016 with ARC Records.
The group will be performing selections from their King of Xhosa album as well as their 2018 release London Live. King of Xhosa’s album was named for Faku’s regal nature and the Xhosa people from which he is a descendant. The album is a celebration of the intrinsic link between African music and Jazz, and of Faku – a man who embodies this musical connection. Faku has been associated with some of South Africa’s classic jazz musicians such as Barney Rachabane, Winston Mankunku Ngozi and Abdullah Ibrahim.
Formed in 2004, this high energy post-bop ensemble features a line-up of compelling, virtuoso musicians with a wealth of experience amongst them. This collective musical invention combines the dynamic players, along with their stunning arrangements as presented on each of the group’s releases. On piano, the group features Francesca Tanksley. On bass is Jeff’s long-time collaborator Rich Syracuse. Erica Lindsay is on tenor saxophone. African Dance percussionist extraordinaire, Fred Berryhill, creates the perfect rhythmic foundation on which the ensemble is built. The percussionists combine the rhythms of Africa with all the subtleties of swing to create a unique and dynamic sound perfect for the compositions at hand.
In addition, this tour will offer unparalleled educational experiences for students in South Africa. On June 19, Siegel’s sextet, all made up of highly sought-after educators will conduct a Studio Workshop through the US Embassy at the State Theatre. Youth between ages 18-25 studying music or wishing to expand their music knowledge are invited to attend this free workshop. Tickets for the workshop are free and can be accessed by reserving a seat on the e-mail email@example.com
