The 37th South African National Community Theatre Association One-Act Festival will be held from 19-24 February at 6.30 nightly in Secunda.
Wiliam Dafoe once said: “Great theatre is about challenging how we think and encouraging us to fantasize about a world we aspire to.” That is what community theatre is all about.
Three plays will be performed nightly starting at 6.30pm, except the final Saturday, the Gala Awards Evening, which starts at 6pm. The best three plays will be performed, then the 25 awards will be announced, with certificates, trophies and photos, followed finally by the announcement of the top plays in order. The evening will be recorded.
All plays have received 2 mentoring courses of 2 hours each with two of our Patrons, Dorothy Ann Gould and Michael Maxwell, and vice chair Swannie Swanevelder three weeks apart at the Sasol Hall in Kinross, to whom we express our thanks. Input was also received from Steven Stead of KickstArt in Durban.
The 25 script entries were high quality and it was hard to choose the plays. Each night there will be verbal adjudications by the three experienced and professional adjudicators – Karen Van der Laag from Isidingo / 7de Laan, Quintin Wills and Vianney Farmer, two upcoming theatre talents who write, act, direct new works and have been seen countrywide. Mpumalanga has some new writers and there will also be plays from KZN and Gauteng.
After the adjudications on Friday, the top three plays will be chosen to be performed on Saturday at the Gala Award Ceremony.
Tickets cost R30 per night and are available from Noel McDonald, 083 309 4315, one of the directors, or at the door of the Johannes Stegman theatre. A weekly ticket for all nights except Saturday will be R100.

Sancta is a member of Assitej, SA (Ms Yvette Hardie – national and international chair), which ran an international Assitej in Cape Town last year, and IATA (the International Amateur Theatre Association). Both sent a delegation.
Sancta will hold its 37th AGM and 13th Annual full-length Festival awards in March.
We congratulate “Poppikie” from Theatre Lions who won Sancta Festivals in the past on getting a position at The Market Theatre Lab for 3 years. Herbert Moekoena, who also won at Sancta festivals, was the Assitej Rep in Witbank for two years, spent two years with Drama for Life at Wits University and has received a bursary from Wits to do a Drama degree for 3 years. Condolences to Thobile Mokoena from The Arts and Culture Dept, Gert Sibande Region, who is our contact there, on the passing of his aunt.
