The National Children’s Theatre kicks off its 2018 season with Antony and Cleopatra, William Shakespeare’s most tragic story of love and duty.
It is an epic romance of the ages, which has, at its core, two notorious lovers – the noble soldier Mark Antony and the unrivalled Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra – two dramatic individuals consumed with passion about whom much has been written in history books. Antony and Cleopatra is this year’s Grade 10, 11 and 12 IEB English set work, and this production brings the text to life for learners and teachers alike.
Set during the days of the Roman Empire, Antony and Cleopatra begins in the wake of Julius Caesar’s assassination, when Mark Antony is at the height of his power. Antony falls in love with Cleopatra, the powerful, sensual and intelligent queen of Egypt. Over the next decade, Antony neglects his empire in favour of a life of decadence and love with his theatrical mistress. Torn between love and duty, Antony’s military brilliance deserts him, and his passion leads the lovers to their tragic end. Jealousy, betrayal, death, and war cannot refute their undying love for each other.
This visually exciting production brings a contemporary vibrancy to an ancient tragedy, staying true to Shakespeare’s poetic language and highlighting its themes and motifs for English and Drama learners. The production will be travelling to schools nationwide from 26 February 2018 onwards.
