National Children’s Theatre (NCT) presents the musical Sparky for children aged 3 to 7, running until December 23.

This musical adaptation by Jessica Buha is based on the novel by Jenny Offill, and the music and lyrics have been created by Laura McKenzie.

This outstanding book begins with the statement, “I want a pet.” The girl’s mother’s response? “You can have any pet you want as long as it doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed.” Wow! That is a serious request! Where does one find such a pet?

Libby’s friend gives her good advice: “Ask the school librarian.” And indeed, it is good advice. The librarian helps Libby to find information about animals. After little research Libby is overjoyed to discover a pet that meets all the criteria ¬ one that doesn’t need to be walked or bathed or fed!

Libby completes a mail order form and when her sloth arrives, she calls him Sparky. It’s love at first sight… even if Sparky doesn’t know how to fetch and always loses at hide-and-seek.

Libby’s friend is not impressed with Sparky’s lack of activity, so Libby decides to teach him some tricks, so she can show him off. Sparky isn’t as easy to train as she had hoped, but the quiet moment of contentment at the end of the story shows that the bond between owner and pet is more valuable than any impressive tricks. Even more important and the moral of the story – and a good lesson for all of us – is to accept a friend or a pet for what they are.

The creative team includes Artistic Director: Francois Theron, Musical Director by Dale Scheepers, Choreographer by Jodie Davimes and Set Design by Stan Knight.
