On Saturday 13 May at 20:00 in the Linder Auditorium, Petronel Malan will take to the stage under the auspices of the Johannesburg Musical Society.
A South African in whom the country of her birth can take pride, she is a multiple Grammy Award nominee and a gold medallist of several international piano competitions.
Called ‘formidable’ and ‘dazzling’ by New York reviewer Harris Goldsmith, she has been nominated three times for a Grammy for her recordings, and won ‘Best Instrumental Solo Album’ for her debut disc Transfigured Bach. A later disc, Transfigured Tchaikovsky, was awarded ‘The American Prize of Excellence in the Arts’, and her Transfigured Mozart and Transfigured Beethoven were also launched to critical acclaim.
Although she maintains a busy concert schedule, performing in important venues such as Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Petronel Malan is a frequent speaker and promotor of classical music in schools, and scholarships in her name are awarded to promising young musicians.
For her Johannesburg recital, Petronel Malan will play an interesting mix of composers. Her programme includes Mozart’s Sonata in F, K 332 – one of his loveliest piano sonatas – and Rachmaninov’s Moments Musicaux. She will also include some intriguing transcriptions and paraphrases of Beethoven and Brahms works by composers such as Stephen Heller and Ernst von Dohnányi.
Booking for this concert is at Computicket, or tickets can be bought at the box office on Saturday 13 May from 17.00 onwards. Students get substantial discounts. But please note that there is no credit card facility at the Linder’s box office.
