On Saturday morning’s edition of Saturday’s Role With Reno, host Renos Spanoudes spoke to Schalk van der Merwe about Sempre Opera‘s production of Verdi’s La Traviata at Joburg Theatre.
La Traviata, opera in three acts by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, first premiered in Venice at La Fenice opera house on 6 March 1853 and will be presented at the Joburg Theatre by Sempre Opera for a limited run.
La Traviata pays tribute to one of opera’s most celebrated heroines, Violetta Valéry. Based on the 1848 novel “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas about the real-life courtesan, Marie Duplessis who died at the tender age of 23. La Traviata, is the poignant tragic opera about the love story between star-crossed lovers, Violetta Valéry and her one true love, Alfredo Germont which ends tragically when Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, forces her to end their relationship so that he can protect his family’s reputation.
