In 2011 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation officially designated 30 April as International Jazz Day in an effort to “highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe”.

International Jazz Day is co-chaired by legendary pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock, who serves as a Unesco ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

For this year’s celebrations, The Orbit features 2017 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Benjamin Jephta; Mbokodo Award winner Thandi Ntuli, and veteran pianist Paul Hanmer.
