Roger Ballen’s acclaimed photographs of music heavyweights, Die Antwoord, are among the highlights of Strauss & Co’s current timed online-only auction.
Among the digital photographs on auction is “Spooky Eyes”, a 2012 image that further cemented Ballen’s reputation as one of the most influential and important photographers of this century. Another standout in the South African and international fine art on offer is “Night”, a colour photograph by South African Jo Ractliffe, whose work was featured in a contemporary photographic exhibition at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum in September last year.
Musicians as a visual theme continues in “Ode to Gideon Nxumalo” and “Chris McGregor” by Sam Nhlengethwa which captures the two jazz greats in a colour lithograph, while the female form is beautifully spotlighted in Lionel Smit’s “Portrait of a Woman” and Alfred Lewis’ “Pondo Women with Aloes”.
The decorative arts section comprises furniture, silver and decorative arts from the Estate of the Late Vyvyan Myerson, one of South Africa’s top valuers and a noted collector.
Strauss & Co is an acknowledged pioneer of the online auction platform in South Africa, with its inaugural digital sale having taken place in 2013.
In taking this step five years ago, Strauss & Co was at the forefront of a worldwide move to complement the traditional auction format with an online element. The recently released Hiscox Online Art Trade Report 2018 revealed that online art market sales reached an estimated $4.22 billion in 2017, up 12% from the year before. The report also found that “almost three quarters (74%) of online art buyers bought more than one art object online in the last 12 months and are expanding the range and type of artworks and collectibles that they buy”. Strauss & Co’s current South African and International Art, Decorative Arts & Books online-only auction has great scope for these kinds of buyers who are looking to expand their collections.
Since moving into the online auction space in 2013, Strauss & Co Online has built a platform that is easy to use, with buyers able to navigate sales from the comfort of their homes during the week-long period of the sale. The platform contains a wealth of information about bidding online for novice buyers and those new to the online format. In this way, Strauss & Co’s online auctions are playing an important role in the support of new collectors.
