March delivers some dazzling violin pyrotechnics for the Johannesburg Musical SocietyOn Sunday 26 March, at 17:00 in the Linder Auditorium, on the Wits Education Campus, Russian violinist Andrey Baranov will delight with some dazzling and fiery violin-playing.
Andrey Baranov, the young Russian who has won almost every major violin competition in Europe, is the next performer to be showcased by the Johannesburg Musical Society. Baranov is the holder of First Prizes from the Benjamin Britten International, the Henri Martineau International, the Paganini International and – perhaps the most prestigious of all – the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium International Violin Competition. With this last win, he joins an elite group of performers which includes, among others, David Oistrakh, Vadim Repin, Leonid Kogan and Phillipe Hirschhorn.
Born into a musical Russian family, Andrey Baranov will be joined by his gifted pianist sister, Maria Baranova, in a programme that is bound to delight. Starting with the so-called Devil’s Trill Sonata by Guiseppe Tartini – a work that challenges virtuoso violinists to this day – Andrey Baranov will also play Paganini’s La Campanella, works by Tchaikovsky, and the programme ends with Maurice Ravel’s electrifying Tzigane.
All tickets for this concert can be pre-booked at Computicket or bought at the Linder box office, which will open at 16:00 on the day. (Please note, there is NO credit card facility at the box office.) Scholars and students 23 years and under with a valid student card get a substantial discount.
