As a teenager in Jamaica, Staceyann Chin lived in fear of an unwanted pregnancy.

As a lesbian performance poet in Brooklyn in her ever-later 30s, she craves nothing more than a child… only to face twists of love, biology, and health insurance.

MotherStruck! sets forth Staceyann Chin’s personal journey to motherhood as a single woman, lesbian and activist who did not have health insurance or a “serious, stable financial set up,” but wanted to have a child. Told through Chin’s uniquely personal and poetic lens, this solo show explored how the process changed her life and how she made peace with what she learned from this profound experience.

Staceyann is in South Africa for Zanele Muholi’s first Solo show in Durban. And FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY, Staceyann will share excerpts and talk about the process of creating and performing her acclaimed solo show “MotherStruck!”

“Ms. Chin has such a magnetic presence…[her] easy-going radiance…keeps you hooked” — THE NEW YORK TIMES

Readings and reflection on MotherStruck! will take place once off at The Ramolao Makhene Theatre at the Market Theatre, on Wednesday 6 December at 20:00.
