It was moments after their show at The Orbit, Home of Jazz in Braamfontein that I got to have a word with Siya Mthembu, the lead vocalist of the renowned art collective, The Brother Moves On, that an inescapable fact became apparent. After waxing lyrical about how their debut live EP, The Golden Wake, is arguably their best body of work. As good as their recordings are, both Siya and I agreed that the best way to experience TBMO is to see them live.
The collective has gone through a lot in the past year to date. One of their lead guitarists, Raytheon Moorvan (aka Raytheism), announced that he was leaving the band to pursue other interests. The band worked on the short lived project, The Blk Brother with peers BlkJks. There was also a lot of speculation over whether they had signed with a mainstream recording label. They went on to drop a follow up to their full length album, A New Myth, the highly anticipated Black Tax EP along with a music video for the single Shiyanomayini.
Their Facebook page confirms that they will be embarking on an European tour in the not so distant future. The eleven date tour will kick off on the 10th July through to August 14th and will feature some of their regular collaborators, Shabaka Hutchings, Itai Hakim, Nolan Dennis, Mmakgosi Kgabi, Kieron Jina, Thor Rixon. The tour will see stops in Marseille, Berlin, Augsburg, Paris, London, Manchester, Bristol and Leeds for various festivals. Make a point of catching them if you happen to be anywhere in Europe at the time. Good luck and break a leg, boys!
