Voice competition opening ceremony honours John Roos

The 6th Unisa International Voice Competition will commence with an opening concert by the Unisa Music Foundation Youth Orchestra and the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra.

It takes place at 7pm in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on Tuesday 23 January.

Jaco van Staden will conduct the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony Orchestra and Tsolofelo Sithole will conduct the Unisa Music Foundation Youth Orchestra. The programme includes popular orchestral pieces such as the Grand March from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and In the Hall of the Mountain King from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite.

The event is dedicated to the memory of John Roos, who served as Artistic Director of the Unisa Music Competitions for many years. After his retirement Mr Roos continued to be a familiar face at the Unisa Music Competitions and the organisers will honour his lifelong dedication to music during this event.

The competitors, representing 11 countries, the distinguished panel of adjudicators and the accompanists will be introduced to the public during the opening ceremony.

Berthine van Schoor will also perform a Sarabande for solo cello by JS Bach in memory of John Roos.

Entry is free to the opening ceremony. Round 1 starts on 24 January at 11am with the Jazz Category.
