Cape Town is in for a treat with the chance to catch South African singer, actress and activist for social change, Zolani Mahola, in performance at the Cradle of Creativity in concert with the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble. The event will include some sing-along music to get your heart soaring!
The #Takeachildtothetheatre Fundraiser concert will take place on Saturday 24 August at 19h00 in the Baxter Concert Hall and will be followed by Standard Bank Gold Ovation award-winning musical Hani: the Legacy, at 20h30, by the Market Theatre Laboratory.
Cradle of Creativity 2019 runs from20 to 25 August at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Rosebank; Theatre Arts Admin Collective and Magnet Theatre in Observatory; and GugaS’Thebe in Langa. Following the incredible success of the ASSITEJ World Congress and International Theatre Festival for Children and Young Audiences in 2017, ASSITEJ SA launched Cradle of Creativity, this new international festival of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA).
As lead singer and member of internationally acclaimed band Freshlyground, Zolani needs no introduction to South African audiences. The group captured the heart of South Africa and also claimed global recognition – one highlight of which was a collaboration with pop superstar Shakira with whom they recorded the official song for the FIFA World Cup 2010 and performed it at the closing ceremony for a global audience of over a billion people. Zolani is well known and respected for unifying a country through music and bridging social, racial and language divides.
Directed by Fiona Du Plooy, the entertaining #Takeachildtothetheatre Fundraiser at Cradle of Creativity is hosted by actor and comedian extraordinaire, Rob van Vuuren, with additional performances by the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble under the baton of Faan Malan and the award-winning Chris Hani Arts and Culture High School Choir.
“We are honoured that these incredible artists are sharing their time and talent to help raise funds to continue the important work of ASSITEJ SA,” says Yvette Hardie, director of ASSITEJ SA and President of ASSITEJ International. “They recognise the tangible impact that having access to the experience of live theatre can make on young lives. It is going to be a wonderful evening of entertainment.
Hani: the Legacy is the Standard Bank Gold Ovation award-winning new-age musical by the Market Theatre Laboratory Alumni. Inspired by hit American musical Hamilton, the Chris Hani story is told through the contemporary song forms of hip-hop, rap and ballad by a dynamic and energetic young cast. Directed by Leila Henriques and choreographed by Teresa Phuti Mojela, the play is a potent reminder of the gap Hani left, and the inspiration his legacy gives at a time when we face enormous social and political challenges.
